Today is World Teachers’ Day! Without the great teachers and horrible ones that crossed my path, my life could have went in a completely different direction. Great teachers see the jewels hidden within the rough of each student. I am forever grateful to the teachers who encouraged and inspired me.
In this age of data driven instruction and high stakes standardized testing, Barbershop Books would like to take a moment to applaud all the teachers who affirm the humanity in all students. Far too many students find themselves in inhospitable classrooms that ignore, deride, or degrade their culture and community.
The political decisiveness, proliferation of lies, and resurgence of white supremacist ideology that has recently found fertile soil in mainstream American society requires teachers with conviction to challenge the policies, curriculums, and programs that would have them view some of their students as not fully human.
A child is not a data point, a mental condition, or a particular trauma he or she has experienced. The best teachers exercise humility, seeking out opportunities to highlight each student’s potential. The exemplary educators that we honor on World Teachers’ Day cultivate the genius of broken and discarded young people. They go the extra mile and seek out context and information with which to construct meaningful learning experiences that stretch themselves and push students toward self discovery and excellence.
For all that you do, we say thank you.
