One of my favorite quotes about literacy comes from Mason Cooley: “Reading gives us some place to go when we have to stay where we are.” A great book allows one to travel along with the characters, to see what they see and to feel what they feel.
Simply by reading we can travel to a faraway place, time travel to another era, immerse ourselves in another culture.
Here are four children’s books and series that allow kids to do just that:
- The Magic Treehouse series by Mary Pope Osborne is popular among children who are beginning to really get into chapter books. Readers can experience the age of the dinosaurs, come face to face with a mummy in ancient Egypt or visit a haunted house in Europe!
- In Christopher Paul Murray’s award-winning The Watsons Go to Birmingham-1963, readers take a trip to the deep south along with the Watson family. There they see a bit of southern culture, experience Civil Rights demonstrations, and get a peek of turbulent times in American History.
- The Magic School Bus series takes a variety of educational topics and brings them to life by hopping aboard the magic school bus and taking incredible journeys. Readers can travel through the human body, the solar system, the ocean floor and more! Children have the opportunity to learn about various places and subjects in an imaginative way.
- In A Ticket Around the World by Natalie Diaz and Melissa Owens, a young boy takes a trip around the globe, stopping to visit friends in 13 different countries including Morocco, China, and Brazil. The boy introduces the reader to friends from each country. Readers learn about the environment, customs, culture, language, food, geography, wildlife, landmarks, and more. Although this is an informational text, it allows children to engage by demonstrating how children just like them live around the world.
These are just a few examples of the many books out there that encourage children to go on imaginary voyages through literature. At Barbershop Books, we believe kids should explore the world by reading!
