Happy National Tell a Joke Day! Here are three reasons why laughter should be encouraged in the classroom:
1. Laughter lowers stress hormones + Relaxes muscles
Many children deal with all types of stress and it doesn’t magically disappear just because a teacher wants a kid to learn something. Welcoming joy and laughter into the classroom is a great way to help students ease into challenging tasks and difficult new topics.
2. Laughter eases anxiety + Improves mood
When children are angry, sad, or otherwise distraught, learning is nearly impossible. Teachers who are sincerely concerned about educating all children should possess both short-term and long-term strategies to assist students in focuses or refocusing on the desired information or task. Great early child hood educators understand how and possess the ability to amuse, engage, and even entertain young learners when necessary.
3. Laughter Enhances teamwork + Helps defuse conflict + Promotes group bonding
If you want students to truly work together in a collaborative way, then laughter should be welcomed. Asking children to work quietly or asking students to stop laughing could actually stifle collaboration and teamwork. Laughter does not necessarily mean distracted or off task.
